GENE THERAPY: Lives Are About To Change

Gene therapy is an experimental technique that uses genes to treat or prevent disease. In the future, this technique may allow doctors to treat a disorder by inserting a gene into a patient’s cells instead of using drugs or surgery. It is said that researchers are testing several approaches to gene therapy, including: Replacing a mutated gene that causes disease with a healthy copy of the gene, Inactivating, or “knocking out,” a mutated gene that is functioning improperly and Introducing a new gene into the body to help fight a disease. The introduction od Gene Therapy into the medical field is a very interesting thing, woooow I must say before I start that I am looking forward to reading more about this in future, especially the execution part of it.

I personally believe that Gene Therapy is a very good thing and it is going to change many lives out there and make the work of medical doctors very easy. Many people will; benefit from this as this will allow doctors to replace mutated genes that causes disease with unhealthy copy of genes, inactivating mutated genes that are functioning improperly and also to introduce a new gene into the body to help fight a disease. so it means that if someone is suffering from a certain disease and his/her immune system is unable to fight it, Gene Therapy will be of great help since a gene can be introduced into the body to help fight that disease. I believe that people will be saved from life threatening diseases and other sicknesses because of this.

Imagine  a family suffering from genetic diseases that is passing from generation to generation and it has killed many people in the family. Now people are scared to have children because they know that they will be born with that certain genetic disease. Even them are living in fear because they know that they can die anytime because of this disease in the family that is passing on from generation to generation and it’s actually killing members of the family. Gene Therapy it could spare future generations in a family from having a genetic disorder( US, genetic home reference 2017).

I know that when new things are being introduced fear creeps in, we even think about the cost if it. Does money really matter? just a question, what is more important your life or money? I am aware that we not from the same background but think about this would you rather die and leave all the money that you have behind or you rather use up all the money you have to save your life? I personally feel that money should not be an hindrance to our health and I am sure that our government will make a plan for the people who does not afford if it comes to that we have to pay even in public hospitals.

In conclusion, gene therapy is here to change lives and make life easy for everyone no matter how much the cost. I see life becoming better with this although there are some risks involved but I believe that with time researchers will find a way to reduce the risks involved. According to the study conducted the Institutional Review Board (IRB) in the US, the technique remains risky and is still under study to make sure that it will be safe and effective.

  1. Hi Ceboo

Gene therapy in its principles seems very logical and a usefule solution of many illnesses.
The problem with the costs is one aspect. This exists in all medical treatment option – who pays, how is it affordable for everybody. Is it ok that some can not have the best treatment because it’s to expensive? A question not only in gene therapy.
As long as researchers hold to the laws and guidlines when developing new gene therapy, this can help the whole humanity a lot. But can we forseen what side effects are possible? How do we explain the patient in clinical trials what their risks are if we are not sure about it by ourself? It’s also imporatant to check each new study good for ethic aspects.
That research is done seriously and honestly is always a problem if there’s a lot of potential profit to gain from a new technique – which may be in gene therapy even more than in others new therapys.
So I think that in somatic gene therapy, if research is properly done, there a not to many general ethic consideration.

    kind regards
